It is 2052, and the world has changed. Rain has stopped, bees have died off, and water is a precious commodity, regulated by the Water Protection Agency (WPA) but fought over in a vicious black market.

EMMA is 12 years old – and five months pregnant - living with her survivalist mother, NANA, in an isolated trailer in what was once Wisconsin farmland but is now swaths of unforgiving desert. Emma has strange abilities, all seemingly linked to her pregnancy – they include visions of a black sun consuming everything.

When the PROFESSOR and men from the WPA find evidence of the impossible – rain, he is convinced Emma holds the key to saving the world and avoiding the inevitable apocalypse.

Nana knows Emma’s importance and the importance of protecting her and the unborn baby. She convinces Emma’s cousin, BON - a survivalist in her own right - with the promise of money and passage to Canada (the only safe zone in North America) to shuttle Emma to Bon’s mother (and the Church) for safekeeping. Though Emma has other plans. She wants to go to Canada with Bon, Olive Mountain to be exact.

With the Professor, the WPA, and the Church after Emma and the unborn baby, each with divergent reasons. Keeping Emma alive may mean saving the world or bringing the Apocalypse and an unborn child that represents either salvation or the ushering in of the end of it all.
