PRICE: $100,000

GENRE: War/Drama

LOGLINE: During the Irish War of Independence, a determined blacksmith from the midlands of Ireland earns the role of Military Commander, organising a group of locals and orchestrating brave and daring events, helping to shape the country and against all odds, defeat one of the mightiest empires in history - bringing freedom to his people.

SYNOPSIS:

The Blacksmith tells the story of IRA leader Sean MacEoin,
who played a crucial part in the fight for Irish freedom in the
1920s. It is an underdog war story – Michael Collins meets
Saving Private Ryan - with a dose of the Braveheart spirit.

ACT 1
We are introduced to the young Sean MacEoin as he trains as a
blacksmith. He listens to conversations his father has with
those who come in to do business in the family forge. It’s here
that he learns of the stories of the painful Irish history at the
hands of the British and develops his nationalism. He joins the
Irish Volunteers and refuses to serve in World War 1, instead,
focusing his efforts on working towards a free Ireland. A
natural leader, he soon finds himself leading the Irish
Volunteers – a feat that does not go unnoticed. Michael Collins
comes to Ballinalee, Longford, and asks Sean MacEoin
personally to organise the midlands in a fight for freedom.

ACT 2
The Irish are severely under-armed compared to the British. Sean
MacEoin’s first tasks are to carry out raids for arms. He
successfully attacks barracks, securing arms and crushing
British morale. Several Irish towns and villages have fallen
victim to British assaults, with houses being burned to the
ground. They soon come for Ballinalee, Sean MacEoin’s home,
but are met by an organised IRA group who successfully
defend the village – the first defence ever – sending the British
running. Soon after, Sean MacEoin carries out the famous
Clonfin ambush - an example of a perfect ambush. He is
revered around the world for his fair treatment of the
wounded British. After a District Inspector is killed in crossfire,
Sean MacEoin is wanted for murder. He is eventually shot after
getting a train back from Dublin, and sent to prison. He is
trialed before a British court and sentenced to death.

ACT 3
A peace treaty with the British is on the table. Michael Collins
launches a prison break attempt that fails and it looks certain
that Sean MacEoin will face his death. Michael Collins threatens
to break off all negotiations with the British unless Sean
MacEoin is made a free man. At the last moment, he is released,
a treaty is signed and Ireland becomes a free state.
Sean MacEoin’s influence cannot be underestimated. He led a
unit of men in the impossible fight against the British, and
never lost one. An instrumental part of Ireland’s history, it’s
time we told his story – one that holds all of the ingredients for
success. There is drama, violence, spirit, determination and a
sense of time and place – all of which is based on facts. A true
underdog story, that sits under the high concept umbrella.
