LOGLINE: In a historically racist town in Georgia, a determined law student investigates her brother's mysterious death and unearths a spine-chilling urban legend about haunted Ring doorbells being used for modern-day redlining.
SYNOPSIS:
"Systemic" is a chilling narrative that begins with a historical note about racial violence in Forsyth County, Georgia, in 1912. The story then shifts to Cumming, Georgia, in 1987, where a white supremacist protest is taking place. In Atlanta, Reggie, a black man dealing with a personal crisis involving his daughter Lexis's demonic possession, declines an invitation to join the protest. Despite Prophetess Aniyah's attempt at exorcism, Lexis threatens to set her parents on fire and is shot by Aniyah during the ensuing chaos.
Fast forward to the present day, where we meet Ronnie Miller, a black doctor living in Cumming who experiences terrifying events at home and ultimately takes his own life. His sister Cora learns of his death and later moves into Ronnie's house with her daughters, Erika and Brooklyn, despite the town's visible racial tension and their new home's eerie occurrences.
Cora seeks answers about Ronnie's death from their neighbor, Lauren, who witnessed it but gets no clear answers. Meanwhile, her daughters adjust to their new surroundings - Erika befriends two girls at school, while Brooklyn befriends Lily but also experiences terrifying dreams involving a preteen girl.
As Cora struggles to find work and get therapy for her family due to the stress of their move, Erika experiences supernatural occurrences at home, while Cora faces racial profiling from local police. At school, Brooklyn draws attention with her exceptional drawing skills but also has unsettling encounters with an entity she believes is Beelzebub.
Cora visits Ethel Hayes, seeking answers about the strange happenings around them. Ethel reveals her tragic past involving racial violence, which she believes led to the drowning of her daughter and grandsons. Back home, Cora takes protective measures against what she now believes are supernatural forces threatening her family.
Despite Father Robert's cleansing ritual at their house and assurances that evil has been banished, Brooklyn continues experiencing horrifying visions at school. She is suspended after drawing a vulgar sketch, and her behavior at home suggests demonic possession.
Cora seeks help from Prophetess Aniyah, who attempts to exorcise the demon from Brooklyn. During the exorcism, the demon taunts Erika and Cora with painful memories of their past, but they refuse to give in. The demon identifies itself as Satan and breaks free, attacking Erika and Cora before being subdued by Aniyah's prayers.
Brooklyn falls unconscious after the exorcism but wakes up two days later, thanking Erika for saving her. Cora confronts Lauren about her involvement in the demonic possessions and marks her for possession by the demon as punishment for her crimes. The narrative ends with a chilling reminder of the racial tensions that fueled these horrific events.
