LOGLINE: After a deadly magnitude 7.0 earthquake shakes Humboldt County, a 28-year-old hiker is tormented by four sadistic 12-year-olds in the redwoods after they discover her trapped beneath the trunk of a redwood tree.

SYNOPSIS:

A 28-year-old woman named Erica is hiking in Redwoods National Park when a 7.0 magnitude earthquake strikes. A large, dead trunk of a redwood tree falls, crushing her leg and trapping her in the middle of the forest, miles from the nearest trail. With no escape, Erica tries to survive on only what's in her backpack: some food and less than 15 ounces of water. After two days, four 6th graders on bikes discover her, but instead of rescuing her, they have sadistic and violent intentions.

The group, led by Tyler and his friend Bradley, steal her backpack and wallet, and humiliate her, calling her “Lassie.” They continually torment and harass her. Erica pleads with them, but Tyler punches her, asserting that she won't speak unless given permission. They brutally beat her, breaking her nose and bloodying her face, and leave, laughing, as Elijah steals an orange, her last piece of food.

Hours later, Erica wakes up, covered in blood, severely bruised on her arms and face. Desperate, she tries to escape, but further injures her leg. Starving and dehydrated, she records a video on her phone, bidding goodbye to her family.

The kids return the next morning, finding her broken tibia bone protruding from her skin. They kick her broken leg, worsening the injury, take selfies with her, and inflict further pain with a hammer, nail, and boxcutter. They carve her stomach and waist with pocket knives, flay her arm, and break her hand. They destroy her phone, steal her water, and leave her for dead.

Hours later, Erica, now suffering from blood loss and trauma, regains consciousness. The forest temperature drops below 40 Fahrenheit overnight. The next morning, she writes in her diary about her impending death, detailing the kids' appearances and names.

The kids return later with champagne and beer. Tyler destroys her diary, splashes champagne on her wounds, and extinguishes a cigarette on her neck. Bradley tortures her further. Enraged, Erica provokes them, but they continue their assault.

Later, Erica regains consciousness again. The kids return, planning to burn her body. As they prepare, Erica seizes a knife and defends herself, injuring Bradley. She threatens to kill him unless the police are called within an hour.

Bradley tries to convince Erica to release him, but she remains vigilant. In a struggle, Erica fatally wounds Bradley.

Rescuers arrive by helicopter and lift the trunk, evacuating Erica. In the parking lot, she sees Tyler and the other two, who reported her location anonymously. Terrified but safe, Erica is taken away by paramedics, while the kids watch, aware she survived.
