HOTEL DIABLO
PRICE: $105,000
SYNOPSIS:
Los Angeles—Jack Wright, a gifted and intelligent individual but plagued by indecision and born with ADHD, finds himself in the midst of a psychiatry session. As the lights dim, he realizes that his therapist is a hologram. Suddenly, the therapist freezes. Frustrated and burdened by his troubled childhood, Jack decides to head home. However, as he exits his building, a bomb strikes, forcing him to escape while his limousine erupts in flames. Jack believes the attack was orchestrated by fossil fuel protesters who want him to shut down his company. To complicate matters further, heavily armed Japanese gangsters begin combing through the wreckage.
In hiding, Jack uses his holographic technology to make a virtual appearance in front of his board of directors. However, to his dismay, he is voted out as the CEO of his late father's publicly-traded company. The board strongly suggests closing down their fracking oil pipeline. Japanese criminals engage in corporate espionage, stealing Jack's holograms with the intention of profiting from them. Everything seems to be falling apart around him. The Yakuza wants to eliminate him permanently to gain control of his trillion-dollar hologram technology. Succumbing to alcohol, Jack has a hazy memory of dragging a body, but its identity remains obscured. He can't determine if it's a genuine memory, a whisky-induced delusion, or if he is a murderer.
A knock on the door interrupts Jack's thoughts. An elderly janitor appears on the doorstep and proclaims, "I saw what you did," before vanishing into thin air. Jack later meets the Yakuza at a downtown casino, where he becomes a hostage. However, he manages to escape as bullets tear up the asphalt behind him. Police eventually arrest Jack, but while being escorted, their vehicle is struck by an oil truck.
Darkness engulfs Jack, and when he awakens, he finds himself in a Japanese hotel from the industrial era named Hotel Diablo. He discovers a message left by his late adopted father, who states that he is searching for Jack at this hotel. There, Jack encounters Professor Chang, an intriguing woman with valuable secrets. While shaving, a whisper warns Jack that "we know what you did." He witnesses a maid being hung by a ceiling fan, but when he blinks, she disappears. In the hallway, Jack runs into the janitor again, who locks him in a closet. Jack is then attacked by demons but manages to escape into an old boiler room. He starts to question if all of this is happening because he is... dead. He wonders if his death in the car crash is a form of punishment. In his search for his deceased father, he encounters someone else searching for a missing loved one—Sabrina Quinn, an off-duty CIA officer whose daughter was kidnapped by the Yakuza during a trip to Beijing, China. Jack's memories reveal that his adopted father was abusive and cruel.
In a flashback, Mr. Wright Sr. is terminally ill and asks Jack to end his suffering. As they search for their loved ones, Jack and Sabrina encounter legions of bloodthirsty demons. Later that night, they share an intimate moment, but their connection is interrupted when Jack takes an elevator. In the elevator, he experiences torment from a manic creature in the mirror. Moments later, the elevator arrives at the top of the tower as if nothing happened. Professor Chang reveals that they are in Tokyo and that Jack is being mentally tortured by his own holograms, operated by the Yakuza under a flagship name, with the intention of selling them for warfare profit. She discloses that she is Jack's biological mother, the one who wrote the "help me" letter from his father confessing to murder.
Professor Chang explains that Jack killed his adopted father due to the extensive abuse he suffered at his hands. A fatal shootout erupts between Professor Chang and the Yakuza. In front of Jack's eyes, they kill each other, but one gangster manages to escape with a briefcase. The hologram research facility experiences a meltdown, triggering an alarm. Sabrina arrives in a helicopter, finally reunited with her daughter, along with CIA medics. She takes Jack's hand and pulls him onto the helicopter, which takes off just as the building explodes and collapses in a triumphant blaze.
THE END.
