GENRE: Comedy/Mockumentary

LOGLINE: This mockumentary follows a quirky group of highly competitive pickleball players as they compete for gold in a national tournament on the Western Slope of Colorado.

SYNOPSIS:

ACT I:

The story begins as we meet the players on each team. Who will win the gold medal? Will it be the Vail Aces, who are determined to win at any cost, the player whose fancy footwork defies logic, the pot-smoking ex-jock hometown favorites, or the Grande Dame of the courts and her donut-junkie husband? A film crew documents their backstories and battles for medal contention, aiming to make an inspirational film. But will the film be a motivational force or a cautionary tale?

ACT 2:

It’s tournament day, and the teams arrive at the courts. Meg, the local ingénue, arrives in her spandex neon pickleball attire, adjusting her Spanx as she greets her new partner and potential boyfriend. Meg and James, known as the kissing couple, are obsessed with making their dog, Stevie, comfortable and anxiety-free. Verne and Arlo, hometown favorites, prepare for the games with Bloody Marys and BBQ. Grande Dame Mary is busy micromanaging the volunteers, while Bob sneaks off to the donut shop. Our Vail Aces, Bill and Jeanie, arrive ready to play, with Bill promising he won’t poach, yet vowing to capitalize on the opponents' weakest player. Pat and Livie, the underdogs with little confidence, rush back to the hotel for Pat’s lucky hat. Jane and Fred, the announcers, attempt to explain the game's confusing rules. Fred is hungover and feels his career has hit an all-time low, while Jane is less than impressed by his inappropriate comments. Throughout the tournament, Fred tries to persuade Jane to go out with him.

Through a series of matches, teams either win, working their way up the ladder, or lose and move to the consolation bracket. Surprisingly, Verne and Arlo end up winning against the more athletic hometown favorites because Verne’s constant chatter and one-liners make the other team lose their cool. Pete, with his mismatched feet, is almost impossible to beat with his unique serve and spins, even though he often receives foot faults for landing in the kitchen. Our kissing couple gets thrown off their game due to their excessive PDA and constant delays checking on Stevie. Jeanie and Bill lose out on the silver medal after Bill poaches and accidentally pushes Jeanie down, resulting in her broken ankle.

ACT 3:

The tournament wraps up with Verne and Arlo celebrating their win with BBQ and brews. The other team dejectedly deals with their injuries and can’t believe they lost to “those clowns.” Although only winning one match, Sandy considers herself the real tournament winner as her partner has asked her out to dinner. Mary, thrilled with her Golden Pickle, takes Bob to the local candy factory.

On the podium, the winning teams step up on the risers to receive their medals. Our underdogs, Pat and Livie, win gold, gaining enough confidence in their skills to attempt more tournaments. The second-place silver medal winners are Pete and Candy, showing that their unique skill set is valuable for pickleball, beating out the athletic team of Jeanie and Bill. As Jeanie stands on the ground due to her broken ankle, they receive the third-place bronze medal. Later, Jeanie has a meltdown, screaming at Bill, saying he has ruined everything and that his poaching will make them miss their luxury pickleball camp. It is doubtful that Jeanie and Bill have learned that winning at any cost is not effective.

Off-air, Fred tells Jane he wants to try pickleball, as it’s harder than he thought and not just old people’s tennis. Jane thinks there may be hope for Fred, but regardless, a date will never happen.

The camera crew, Cody and Kyle, worry that there is not much usable footage for an inspiring film. Two of the couples appear headed for divorce, and many players were injured. As Cody says, “All these injuries, my God, I wouldn’t want my folks playing this.” But they both agree they want to try the sport when they get home.

So, although the tournament has been a cautionary tale, even the doubters become inspired to give pickleball a try.
